What are the best skis for a post racer?
I raced club and high school and have gone through two pairs of extremely loyal and reliable Fischer SLs and a pair Spyder GS skis, I know this is rather stupid of me to ask, having been so focused on racing for 4+ years I completely forgot there were any other types lol, I have looked over the Fischer Wateas and a few others, and read plenty of magazines, I really want to know however, hopefully from experience, are which pair best suits a racer who needs a fair amount of carve but still handle powder to an extent?
As an ex racer, you need a high performance ski, but not necessarily a race ski. A high end all mountain ski with a wide foot and a soft to medium flex pattern. Since you have used Fischer in the past, look at their current production, keep what you have as a second pair and demo the Fischers that you are interested in buying. I am on K2 about 4 years old and will need to replace at least one pair this season. The model I use is the Axis, which has replaced by the new lines of Apache models. Try to find a foot width of 80mm or more for good float in the soft snow. A pair of skis is designed to have about 100 to 200 days on the slope. If yours have less than that, try a full tune up which should include a good edge sharpening and maybe a stone grind. I seldom suggest the stone grind for a recreational skier, racers are a different situation, and even then unless you are Olympic class, it is only needed once every 100 days or so.
