I am going to a Gala this weekend. The dress code is casual but Chic. What would a woman wear or a man?

I was planning on wearing a black & white knee length halter dress that is a bit classy. The gala is in New York and for the hospital there. It is an outside event under neath a tent. There will be a sit down dinner and auction.
